What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw which is used to replace the natural root of a tooth. Once the surrounding bone heals it grips the titanium screw. A crown can then be attached to this titanium screw providing function and cosmetics like natural tooth.

Is it painful to get dental implants?

Modern implants are tiny compared to the natural tooth roots. The trauma caused to bone, when placing an implant, is therefore much less compared to getting a tooth removed. A patient can expect mild discomfort or pain for few days at the most. They will be provided with instructions and analgesics to manage the pain. For larger and complex work, doing it under dental sedation can be appropriate sometimes.

How long do dental implant last?

Implants can last a long time - possibly a lifetime. However, normal wear and tear can still occur. You can get gum disease around dental implants just as same as around natural teeth.

How many dental implants do I need?

A single implant is used to replace one tooth. Sometimes, it can also be used to replace two adjacent missing teeth. Two implants can be used to bridge a larger gap replacing three or four adjacent missing teeth. Four implants can be used to support a bridge to replace an entire lower or upper jaw having 10-12 teeth.
